In the morning we took the bus to Aveiro, where we visited the eco museum "Marinha da Troncalhada", a part of the salt-pans that show the visitors the production of salt in the traditional way. There we had a guided tour by the Portuguese young cicerones and two professional guides. We learnt that the salt production is divided into three sequencial parts: first they clean and maintain the salt-pans (from March to May), then the salt is made through evaporation and crystallization (from May to July), and finally, the harvest of salt from July to the first rain (in September or October). The guides explained how the pipes work, how we storage salt and clean the basins. They also told us about the salt glassworth or salicornia which is a very succulent and halophytic plant that can be eaten from June to July. On the walls between the evaporation basins, two other plants grow, that are the sea purslane and the sea rush. 

After a short spending spree in the souvenier shop nearby, we were taken to a lecture at the University of Aveiro, where on the campus we stopped at the biology and geography department. The presentation explained how salt influences daily life. In one of the unversity canteens, we went to have a delicious lunch such as students can have in their breaks between the lectures. After that we walked to the museum Santa Joana Princesa where we saw a part of a church, paintings and sculptures. The bus picked us up and we drove to Ílhavo where we visited the Maritime museum. We saw boats, paintings and sculptures. Then we headed back to school where we reunited with our "families" and went to eat dinner with them. Every family decided to do different activities and show us something about their traditions and environment.Some visited the beach of the Atlantuc ocean. We came back to the accommodation quite late, tired of the long day, but happy to have known so many different things. (Julaj Čehovin Sirk)
